Talking about accountability is like eating broccoli. But broccoli is healthier than Twinkies in terms of promoting longevity, health, and happy personal and business relationships.
Unfortunately, in modern Western culture, many are allergic to personal accountability, perpetuating hopelessness, learned helplessness, anxiety, depression, and addiction.
Eastern philosophy, and its application to modern Western thought patterns about [non]accountability, can decrease stress, anxiety, and many other mental health issues prevalent in Western society. And it's not difficult to learn and incorporate into daily life. The overriding principle is that it's not our circumstances, but rather our thoughts about our circumstances that underlies most emotional distress.
Take accountability for our thoughts and consequent actions, and we take control of our lives.
The down-side for many people, of course, if they do choose to take accountability for their happiness, they'll no longer be able to blame their circumstances for their state, choices, and actions - leaving their victimstance mentality. Then those who have surrounded them and co-revelled in their self-imposed victimhood, will likely leave the picture because the newly-accountable person's healthy adaptation now exposes their friends' self-defeating pathology.
But fundamental change for better or worse always impacts relationships.
The good news is that before long, the right people will begin to appear in the accountable person's life, enriching both their personal experience and their future.
